He's an interesting one

My three year old is not yet potty trained. I have tried and we are still struggling with this journey. Recently Hoss has been "doing #2" in his pull-up after going to bed.

Saturday evening I went upstairs to check on him and the stench filled the air. Hoss was asleep, but his pants were full. I tried to change him without waking him, but it was not successful. He squirmed and fought for a few minutes and finally fully woke up.

I told Hoss that if he pooped he needed to tell us by saying, "Mommy, Daddy I pooped!" Donnie also reiterated this with him when he came to check on us. Hoss was barely awake, so I didn't think he heard us.

The next morning Donnie heard him say, "Mommy, Daddy I pooped!" He went to check on Hoss and found that he had not pooped, but was remembering our late night conversation.

Hoss had his Larry the Cucumber and The Incredible Hulk and was talking to one of his wrestling figures who was laying on the ground. The wrestling figure was saying, "Mommy, Daddy I pooped!" as the Mommy and Daddy (Larry and Hulk) stood by.

A few minutes later Larry and Hulk looked like this.

I can't decide if they are about to hug and kiss or if they are ready for a smackdown wrestling match.

Either way, my kid has an interesting imagination.

I'm still trying to figure out if Mommy is Larry or the Hulk. I don't know which is worse, the tall green thing with no arms or legs and very large eyes or the large mean looking man with muscles, torn purple pants, and fists, ready to fight.

Side note: As I was typing this post, my dear child was heard saying, "that's my pee pee" from his bedroom (it was bedtime). I asked him if he pooped and he said, "I poopied." *Sigh* Antibiotics are not this child's friend.

Poop in the potty was a long difficult road for us. Many, many loads a laundry later we finally have achieved potty trained status.

Moose got one M&M for pee-pee in the potty, and two for poop. I paid attention to when he had to go typically, and in the beginning, I would stop whatever we were doing and say, okay time to try to go poop! (after breakfast, and before TV when we got home from work/school) Then not let him do anything until it happened. ("after you go poopy in the potty, we will watch cartoons...") After the first couple times, he realized I was not going to let him play or watch TV, until he had pooped. So he would try to go. We had our accidents of course, but once you get on a schedule, all is well. When we first started potty training, I would make him try to go once and hour, then it was every two hours, then every three, then we was pretty much trained. He does both by himself now, he can turn the lights on, and do his pants and everything. I am still required to wipe the bottom however;)

Of course, I've never potty trained a boy (3 girls here), the best advice I can give you is to not make a big deal out of it. He will eventually understand the concept and in 10 years, no one will remember (except you) how old he was when he was potty trained.

Just wait until he does and the he describes in great detail what it was like. Sigh or maybe my child is just way to interested in bodily functions

Each child is different, but Simon had the pooping in his sleep deal because he was scared to poop. He had a bout of constipation and that made it a horrible cycle. He wouldn't go because he thought it would hurt and then since he held it for so long it would hurt....

Not the best memories, however I got familiar with his routine and then had him try for 10 to 15 minutes at that time of day each day and once he went and it didn't hurt we were on the road to being done.

My advice is that he's ready-he has the bodily control to go on demand if he can also hold it because he wants to. It only makes for a rough (and often messy) couple of weeks but then your are done with diapers and there's no better feeling than that! I suggest taking a few days and commiting to it. We call it "Potty Training Boot Camp". I take a week of vacation and stay home to potty train.

We haven't conquered overnight yet with Simon, but he's not 3 til Jan.
